Dear HORTUS subscriber,

All good things come to an end, and I hope you’ll agree that HORTUS (which I founded forty years ago in 1987) is, indeed, a ‘good thing’.

However, now aged 80, having devoted half my life in the pursuit of first-class garden writing, the time has come to stop.
HORTUS has been a force for good, putting into the world something approaching 20,000 pages of wholly original material from a diversity of writers, illustrators and photographers throughout the English-speaking world – and beyond.

Our closing issue, Number 160, will be published in December and until then you can buy it, and the upcoming summer and autumn issues, individually when printed via hortus.co.uk. If you already have a subscription for 2026, you do not need to do anything. You can for the remainder of this year also buy at a reduced cost back numbers in good condition as available (excluding 2026 issues) to fill any gaps on your shelves. I look forward to paying tribute to all contributors and helpers – and, above all – subscribers, in our final issue, but should I be denied that opportunity you must accept now my enormous appreciation of everyone’s involvement in making HORTUS an outstanding impact on the betterment and appreciation of gardening, however and wherever it’s practiced.
